Saturday afternoon we attended the American Christian Academy
graduation. The eighth graders were included in the ceremony
for the Seniors. It was a beautiful ceremony; the two pastors
who spoke encouraged the graduates to stand firm in the Lord
as they go out into the world. The eighth graders were encouraged
to see these graduates and emulate their hard work! The reception
of cake and punch was lovely. Mrs. W puts on a mean party, with
the help of many hardworking volunteers.
Daniel accepting his eighth grade diploma from Mrs. W
American Christian Academy requires that all eighth graders
take a sampling of the IOWA test. Daniel scored at a 10th grade
reading and comprehension level, and at a beginning 9th grade
math level. I have to tell you- I sweat it out while waiting
the results, even though I knew it was not a pass and fail. I
was anxious to see if he was at grade level. Woohoo!
Daniel leading the Flag Pledge. The Boy Scout who has been leading the
flag pledge for the past four years graduated on Saturday. Mrs. W requested
he be the one too lead it this year.

Bachelors
Ugg- only a boy would make a sandwich like this. I pity this boy's future
wife. How will she be able to out-do such a tasty meal? She better
be a whiz in the kitchen, or be willing to go out for fast food alot!
My two up and coming bachelors- addicted to topramen noodles!

Chicken Pot Pie
I made chicken pot pie for dinner tonight. It always elicits excited
responses like "Glorious! Chicken pot pie!" and before it gets served,
"Is there enough for seconds?" You can make it too- recipe below.

Playing Out In the Yard
We finally got the dirt in the raised beds and planted all the
veggies. Sugar snap peas, bell peppers, two kinds of tomatoes,
sunflowers, watermelon, cucumber and pumpkins. Whew! We'll see
how it works out, they may end up being flower beds next year!
I made the arches for the beans and cucumbers out of left over
pvc pipe. I cut up the rest of the pipe to sizes they could
use in the yard. I love that Erik discovered he could put the
hose in one end and water would fill up the pipe and spill out
the side. He could hear it filling up and was beginning to gauge
when the water would be spilling out.

Book Sale
I went to a homeschool book sale on last Friday up in Placerville.
It was about a 50 minute drive. It was put on by Matt's sweetheart's
moms sister! (her aunt Tara) anyhow- they invited me and anyone I
could think of to come up an buy some books- and boy, did I! This is
just a portion of what I got. I was also able to meet Jen's Mom.
Hi Laureen! They are a great family and make a mean sweet tea! I
also met Jen's little sisters, who are the sweetest little ladies.
When I meet little girls like them, I console myself for not having
any girls by praying I get daughters-in law like them some day!
I LOVE Diana Waring. She reads history, explaining it as she goes
along. I scored with these.
The archeology book is for Daniel.
He has decided to become an archeologist of Norse history. This coming
year, he will be taking Old Norse for Beginners, online, and then he'll
have to choose between learning Norwegian, Danish or Swedish. (Norway
is where most of the dig sites are now.) Icelandic would be his
ideal language to learn, as it is a language the vikings could
understand, but he figures it would be better to learn the old
Norse for documents and artifacts, but be able to speak the language
of the modern country where he would live and work.
I could kick myself for not taking my camera. I saw the sweetest thing
at the end of the sale. When I went to my car, there were two girls
(about 10 years old) behind the church building in the shade.
They each had a stack of books next to them and were reading intently,
waiting for mom. WOW! I absolutely enjoy seeing kids so engrossed in
books.
Please leave a comment and let me know your favorite place to read and
favorite books as a kid.

"The Happiness of life is made up of minute fractions,
the little soon-forgotten charities
of a kiss
or a smile,
a kind look,
a heartfelt compliment,
and the countless infinitesimals
of pleasurable thought and genial feeling."
These may seem trifles, and the omission of them may be deemed unworthy of thought; but they are the daily bread of love, and the hearts go hungry when they are omitted. It may be only carelessness at first in a busy husband or a weary wife that fails in these small, sweet courtesies, and it may seem a little matter, but in the end the result may be a growing far apart of two lives which might have been for ever very happy in each other had their early love but been cherished and nourished.
For love will starve if it is not fed,
And true hearts pray for their daily bread."

Pulleys and Gladiolas
I have been waiting to get to Home Depot to get a really nice pulley
for Erik. I was finally able to get one and set it up. He
was so tickled! He stood there and pulled the basket up and down as
we talked about the pull and release & how things can be pulled up
high and dropped like a shot! Pre-school is so much fun!
Here is Jacob putting the rope in his pulley. We put it down low
for obvious reasons, but really, he just wants to load the rope
and pull it out again at this point.
FUN!!!
Look what Curtis built for me this past weekend. I had it
planned out and was ready to go get it all and build it myself,
but we got the flu a few months ago and I never picked up steam
on it again. So he dragged me to HD to pick it all up and built
them in one day!!! (smiling, adoring applause, kissing) I put water
sealer on them and they are almost dry enough to pound into the
ground and get the dirt into. The boys cannot wait to get seeds in.
Here is something I am so proud of- I have wanted plants along
this fence for years, but the grass is so thick here- I was inspired
by a bag of gladiola bulbs a gal brought to church to give away. So
I took some time to weed and stuff them along the fence. Erik
got such a kick out of helping me plant them, and was so surprised
to see these shoots coming up. They will be yellow and orange.
Summer is almost here! I signed Erik up for Starfish level swim lessons
at the local pool. I decided to keep Jacob out of the pool, as Erik
needs some space to experience swimming without having the "Shadow"
jumping into the spotlight. I'm disappointed they have raised the prices
so much that I can only afford one week of lessons! I'll see how
it goes, maybe we we can squeeze some lessons in later.

Some Days I Just Want to Hide
He looks like I feel. Some days I just want to hide, but...

Seeking new heights as you walk Jesus' way;
Heed not past failures, but strive for the prize,
Aiming for goals fit for His holy eyes."
